First drafts of my ancillary tasks - Digipak for a tour DVD

First attempt at the back cover of my digipak for a tour DVD

I chose to use the Paramore colours we had chosen when designing our style guide for the band which were mustard yellow and light grey. I try to incorporate all the key feathers I found the back cover of a digipak had when carrying out my research, such as the track listing on the back, a basic synopsis of what the DVD was about and where the tour took place. I also included the technical features such as running time, as who the DVD was produced and filmed by etc. I added a barcode to allow it to be purchased and started to add logos and sponsors such as blu-ray. After having most of the basics in place I started to play around with the images adding polaroids to fit the mise en scene we were trying to portray for the band and the Fuelled By Ramen logo, the producers of Paramores music.

After attempting this first draft there were many elements that I was not happy with, so i decided to further develop my work to fit with the mise en scene that we had chosen for Paramore and used in our music video.

This was the first attempt of my front cover for my DVD, i followed my research and the style guide us as a group had developed and came up with this draft. After producing this i then wanted to develop the polaroid style i had used on my back cover through to this piece which meant changing the layout of this product.

Further development in my ancillary tasks, photo edits

These are the pictures I have edited for my ancillary tasks, I will use these edits to complete my magazine advertisement for a new album or tour and for my digipak of the RIOT! tour. I have edited all my images in black and white on Photoshop, i chose to do this because i think they feel more personal and will have a good contrast between the colours my group has decided on for Paramore as a brand, mustard yellow, grey and red. I added a filter called 'grain' over all of the photographs i edited to make them more edgy and rough to fit the genre of rock.

Shooting day - final band shots! Boiler room

These photographs show the process of filming our final band shots for the music video. They are on location in our school boiler room, this room had the mise en scene that we were looking for. Through trying the various other locations that we did (school gym, drama room) it helped us to find out what worked and what didn't, helping us find the perfect location. 

Editing our narrative footage

The photographs below show the process of editing our narrative footage on the software Premier Pro, as well as just cutting shots to place with the music we also used filters over the footage to get effects on our shots, and added transitions between shots when they were needed.

Applying theories to our video

We have been learning about different theories in our theory work in media studies and discussing in class how they link to practical work.

Negus was our main focus when looking at genre theory across media forms, we kept what he found in mind when creating our music video and followed the conventions of our genre, so that we wouldn't be met with rejection for our target audience. We followed conventions by combining both band shots and narrative in our video.

Shooting day - final narrative! Stalker!

Below are images taken from the day of filming our final narrative shots, as a group we were unaware of how the footage would look as the location we were using was very small and restricted us. The outcome was very successful and really fits with the styles of video we were looking to create. There were a few disasters throughout the filming process such as the lamp we were using for lighting got knocked over and the bulb broke. This turned out to be in our favour as we had to make do with Hannah Vandervennin's iPhone light, this enabled us to create the strobe effect you will see in some of the close ups of the narrative actress (me) in the video.

Sports hall footage

By deciding to further develop our idea and change the locations on our band and narrative shots, we began to carefully look back and evaluate our band shots in our school sports hall and could see the faults and factors we as a group were not happy with very clearly. The lighting was not as successful as we thought when we first looked at it, the background was not completely flooded and the lighting on the vocalists (my) face was enhanced enough and quite dim in some places.
